To support the growing needs of our Canvas community, Academic Innovation has introduced additional Canvas Course Roles in academic courses. For a more detailed version of these roles, please view our Canvas Course Role Permissions Chart.

Instructor Roles

Role Primary Use Permission Highlights Granted Access Via
Teacher Official instructor(s) of record for the course only.

IMPORTANT: Users with this role will appear in Simple Syllabus, Course Evaluations, and other applications that pull data from Canvas.
  • Full Add/Edit/Delete Access
  • Add/Remove Designers, TAs, and Teachers.
Banner
Secondary Teacher For individuals who are not listed as the instructor of record in Banner but share teaching responsibilities and/or have a legitimate need for permissions equivalent to those of the Teacher role.
  • Full Add/Edit/Delete Access
  • Add/Remove Designers and TAs.
Teacher

Note: Teachers cannot add students to a course; all student enrollments are managed by Banner.

Course Support Roles

TA (Teaching Assistant) Teaching assistants who will be supporting the instructor(s) for a course.

Designer Designers, or course builders, who will assist in the design and development of a course.

Grader For individuals who need access to perform grading in a course.

SDS Provider The purpose of this role is to enable service providers (Student Disability Services staff and associated service providers) to review published and unpublished course content.

Individuals with this role will be able to provide services for students registered with Student Disability Services (such as ASL interpreting, live captioning, SDS Adaptive Testing Center, and SDS Alternative Format).

Tutor The purpose of the role is to allow Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders/Tutors to view published course content.
