Overview
Help viewers get the most out of your videos by adding a short, thoughtful summary. A little context goes a long way in keeping viewers engaged and on track!
Sentence Structure
Your video description should be around 3-5 sentences max and cover the following general information:
- 1 sentence: What is the video about in relation to expected learning outcomes?
- 3-4 sentences: Who are the key players that should be identified? What overall is the flow of the video? What are the key features that someone only listening to the video might need to know regarding visuals (style, setting, period, etc.)?
Below are examples for you to see how the flow of these descriptive texts can go!

What You Should Know About Your Students with Disabilities
This video is a great introduction to the world of accessible learning. Listen to several college students give firsthand recounts of experiences and interactions they have had while attending college. With scenes of daily college life intermixed, these self-videos from college students share their thoughts and advice, to help inform teachers and students alike the realities of student learning with disabilities. This video exemplifies accessibility through accurate captions, low to little music over dialogue, and minimal emphasis on visual being a necessity for understanding the content.
Where to Place Descriptive Summaries?
The Digital Accessibility Team recommends placing the descriptive summary above the video when posting content in Canvas. While the summary can be placed within Panopto and YouTube to ensure it always travels with the video, it must also be copied and pasted above the video in the course, as it will not appear for students unless they view the content directly in the video platform.
