Overview
Challenges and setbacks are a normal part of learning, especially in college. While people often focus on outcomes, growth happens through experience, reflection, and persistence. Developing a growth mindset can help students build resilience and confidence as they work toward their goals. Here are several ways to help students view challenges as opportunities for learning and growth
Normalize Learning Through Challenges by Sharing Your Own
Everyone encounters challenges and opportunities for growth at some time in their life. This doesn’t mean that they are “less” than anyone else, it just means that they haven’t learned that thing yet. It’s important for students to see how they can learn, adapt, and achieve success. Sharing your own learning journey can go a long way to showing students that if you can do it, they can too.
Acknowledge Their Experiences and Share Resources
It’s okay to acknowledge that things haven't gone as planned and move on from it. Let students know you understand the challenges they're facing and that they are normal. Share UT San Antonio’s wellbeing resources, and information on growth mindset and imposter syndrome so they can better understand what obstacles they may be encountering.
Talk About Challenges as Opportunities for Learning
It’s important to embrace learning opportunities, reflect on experiences, and continue moving forward. Challenges and setbacks can become valuable teaching and learning moments for faculty and learning moments for students. Encourage students to reflect on what they've learned and identify strategies for future success.
