Overview
At UTSA, we are committed to safeguarding the privacy and security of our students' personal information. The University of Texas System, on behalf of UT institutions, has a formal data-sharing agreement with Honorlock to ensure that all data collected through their services is handled in accordance with UT System policies. This agreement supersedes Honorlock’s general Terms of Service and includes specific requirements for the protection of the privacy and security of UTSA student information.
We’ve outlined the following frequently asked questions regarding the use of Honorlock.
What data does Honorlock collect during an exam?
Honorlock collects certain student information necessary to provide its online proctoring services, such as student name, course number, and exam name. Depending on the settings enabled by your instructor, this may also include webcam recordings, desktop activity, audio recordings, and exam and web pages visited during an examination.
Prior to beginning an Honorlock exam, students are presented with the authentication settings enabled by their instructor. For more information, please visit the Honorlock Student Help Guide and the Honorlock Extension Permissions and Functions help article.
Can Honorlock sell my data to third parties?
No, our agreement does not allow Honorlock to sell student information to third parties. Our agreement with Honorlock ensures that all data collected is used solely for the purpose of providing proctoring services.
Does Honorlock comply with FERPA?
Yes, our agreement with Honorlock requires them to comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The proctoring data collected is considered part of your educational record and is treated with the same level of protection required under these regulations.
How is student data secured and protected?
Honorlock data is processed and stored within the United States on Amazon Web Services (AWS). All data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and Honorlock is SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR compliant. Additionally, our agreement requires Honorlock, at a minimum, to meet the administrative, technical, and physical security measures outlined in UTS 165 Information Resources Use and Security Policy.
Do I have to show my photo ID when taking an exam?
No, UTSA opted to disable the “Test Taker ID” authentication setting when beginning an exam.
Can Honorlock be used as a lockdown browser without audio/video recording?
While Honorlock does support “Browser Guard,” their version of a lockdown browser without any audio/video recording, it is up to each instructor to determine how to proctor an online assessment.
