Updated on

Overview

This article shows how to setup and utilize extra credit questions using Gradescope for bubble sheet exams. It covers setup instructions, Canvas assignment linking, student roster syncing, and multiple exam versions.

Edit Answer Key

When you are setting up your answer key you can make sure to set the value of the Extra credit questions at 0. This is the only part of the extra credit setup that you will do prior to administering the exam.

Manage scans

Load the PDF file(s) into your Gradescope with the Select PDF Files button.

Manage submissions

Check the submissions for errors and connect the exams to the students in your Canvas course.

Grade submissions

We recommend syncing your roster in Gradescope several times throughout the semester. This keeps your student list up to date as students add or drop your course.

  1. In the Grading Dashboard we are going to select the question(s) that needs to be adjusted to fit the extra credit we want to give out.

2. For this example we are using Question 5 as our bonus, you can see above that it is already set to 0 points.

3. Clicking on the link for question 5 opens the Grading by Group screen with that question selected:

4. Now we will need to click on the Rubric Settings gear on the right-hand side:

5. In the Rubric Settings there are three things that must be looked at:

  1. Positive Scoring is turned ON
  2. Score Bounds Ceiling is turned OFF
  3. Score Bounds Floor is turned OFF

6. Once your settings look like this you can Save them.

7. Next, the final step in this screen is adjust the Rubric for this question so that the correct answer is worth however much we need it to be, 1 point in our example.

8. Click on the correct answer and type in the number of points it should award if selected. For our example, E is correct and is worth 1 point.

9. Now all of the students that answered this question correctly will receive their bonus point!

Review grades

Gradescope Review Grades Toolbar with Post All Grades to Canvas highlighted

In the Review Grades page in Gradescope, you'll want to select the option to "Post All Grades to Canvas." Do NOT click "Publish All Grades" unless you are wanting to release the bubble sheet and rubric (answers) to students.
