Getting Started with ReadSpeaker (Student)

Updated on

Overview

ReadSpeaker is a text-to-speech tool that is seamlessly built into your Canvas courses. It instantly converts your written course content (such as pages, documents, and quizzes) into natural-sounding audio, so you can listen to the materials while following along with synchronized text. This is a great way to boost your reading speed, improve comprehension, and reduce screen fatigue. This guide shows you where to find the tool and how to start listening to your assignments immediately.

How to Access and Use ReadSpeaker

ReadSpeaker is easily accessible across most of your Canvas courses, no downloads or separate accounts required!

1. Accessing the Tool (WebReader)

Look for the "Listen" button or a small speaker icon that appears in Canvas Navigation. Some courses may have the tool permanently available via a small Speaker icon or a Listen button located at the bottom-left or bottom-right of your screen, which will activate the reading toolbar. Once you click on the “Listen” button or the small speaker icon, ReadSpeaker player will jump to the top of the content page you are on within your course. Once you click on the Next or Previous buttons, ReadSpeaker will return to its original location in the Canvas Navigation

2. Using the Tool to Listen

Once you see the "Listen" button, you can start using the tool right away:

  • Click the "Listen" Button: Click the play button on the ReadSpeaker player that appears. The player will start reading the entire page content from the beginning.
  • Highlight and Read Selected Text: To hear only a specific section, simply highlight the text you want to hear with your mouse or finger, and then click the small pop-up play button that appears next to your selection.

3. Using DocReader for Documents

For uploaded documents (like PDFs, Word files, or PowerPoint presentations) found in your course:

  • Look for a document icon with a speaker next to the file name.
  • When you open the document, look for the DocReader toolbar at the top, and click the play button to begin listening to the document.

4. Customizing Your Reading Experience

Click the Settings button (usually a gear icon) on the ReadSpeaker toolbar to personalize your experience:

  • Adjust Voice: Change the voice, language, and reading speed.
  • Change Colors: Customize the text and highlight colors.
  • Reading Aids: Use tools like the Page Mask (to dim the screen except for a focused line) or Enlarge Text (to show the current phrase in a large banner).
