Canvas is The University of Texas at San Antonio's Learning Management System (LMS), serving as the central digital environment for all academic courses. It provides faculty with a robust, streamlined platform for managing all course activities. From organizing content and distributing assignments to posting announcements and tracking student progress, Canvas enables effective, efficient communication and seamless course delivery. This guide highlights Canvas's essential features and provides links to the best specific resources to help you integrate the tool into your teaching practice.

Canvas offers an intuitive design and powerful functionality to enhance both your course management and the student learning experience: 

  • Streamlined Course Management: Use SpeedGrader for quick, centralized grading and New Analytics to monitor student engagement and performance in real time, making course administration faster and easier.
  • Digital Accessibility: Features like the Ally Accessibility Checker and the built-in tools in Simple Syllabus help ensure all your course materials are compliant with accessibility standards from the moment you publish them.
  • Mobile-Friendly: Canvas offers top-rated mobile apps for instructors and students, allowing you and your students to access course content, grades, and notifications anywhere.
  • 24/7 Support: Faculty have access to direct, around-the-clock technical support for Canvas-specific questions.

Course Structure 

  • Ally - An accessibility checker that scans Canvas content for issues and provides guidance to improve accessibility for all users.
  • Qwickly - A course management tool that allows users to post announcements, send emails, create content, and more to multiple Canvas courses at one time.
  • Simple Syllabus - A centralized, template-driven platform embedded in Canvas that automatically populates university policies, course details, and assignment schedules to help faculty quickly personalize, publish, and maintain an accessible, standardized, and dynamic class syllabus that is always current. 

Assessment & Integrity 

  • Gradescope (replaced ParScore Spring 2025) - a digital grading platform that supports a range of assessments, including bubble sheets (Scantron-style), written responses, and programming assignments.
  • Honorlock  - An online proctoring service that uses AI and human monitoring to prevent academic dishonesty during exams.
  • Turnitin - A plagiarism detection software that checks submitted work against a vast database to identify potential originality issues. 

Content & Media 

  • Adobe - A comprehensive suite of creative applications for creating engaging visual content like graphics, flyers, and short videos, making it easy to design high-quality multimedia projects.
  • Panopto - A video capture and management platform that allows users to record, edit, host, share, and add captions to video content.

Engagement & Collaboration 

  • IClicker - iClicker, a FREE interactive classroom response system available to all UT San Antonio students, enables instructors to cultivate dynamic and engaging learning environments that encourage student participation and enhance learning outcomes.
  • Namecoach – A platform that enables individuals to record and share the correct pronunciation of their names within Canvas.
  • Padlet  - A digital bulletin board where users can share text, images, videos, and links in a collaborative and organized space.
  • PlayPosit - A platform that transforms passive videos into interactive learning experiences by embedding questions and activities at key points.
  • Zoom - A video conferencing platform enabling real-time virtual meetings and interactions.
