Getting Started with ReadSpeaker (Faculty)

Updated on

Overview

ReadSpeaker is a suite of text-to-speech tools integrated into Canvas that instantly converts written course content into natural-sounding audio. This tool helps faculty communicate effectively by providing all students with a bimodal learning option (visual and auditory), which significantly improves comprehension, retention, and course outcomes for diverse learners. This guide will introduce you to the core features and provide resources to help you integrate the tool seamlessly into your course content.

Key Features

To ensure your content is read accurately and effectively, all faculty must follow accessibility best practices by formatting their content correctly (e.g., using headings, bulleted lists, and proper HTML/text rather than image-only text). Review Accessibility Action Plan for Faculty for more.

  • Text-to-Speech (TTS) with Synchronized Highlighting: Reads content aloud while simultaneously highlighting the text by word or sentence.
    • Why Formatting Matters: Requires clear, well-structured text (not images) to pair the audio with the correct visual content accurately.
  • DocReader: Reads uploaded online documents, including non-accessible formats like image-only PDFs.
    • Why Formatting Matters: While it attempts to read image-only files, best practice is to provide accessible, text-based documents for the highest quality experience.
  • Customizable Settings: Students can adjust reading speed, volume, voice, text color, highlighting color, and use study tools like a page mask or reading ruler.
    • Why Formatting Matters: Standard, clean formatting (like properly nested lists and consistent headings) allows these customization tools to work consistently across all content.
  • Download MP3: Allows students to download an audio version of the content for offline listening.
    • Why Formatting Matters: Ensures students who need flexibility for listening on the go or who have limited internet access can use your content.
