Getting Started with NameCoach (Students)

NameCoach is a simple but powerful tool available through Canvas that allows you to record the correct pronunciation of your name in your own voice. By recording your name, you help your instructors and classmates address you correctly from the very start, which fosters clear and professional communication in the classroom. This guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to create your one-time recording and share it outside of Canvas using the NameBadge feature.

Steps to Record Your Name  

You only need to record your name once, and the audio file will automatically appear in all your Canvas courses where NameCoach Roster is enabled.

  1. Access the Recorder
    • Look for the NameCoach Roster link in your Course Navigation menu (left side of your course page) and click on that link

  1. Begin Recording

    If this is your first time, you may need to click "Authorize" to grant access.

    Click the “Edit Your Info” button.

  1. Choose a Method
    • Select either Phone, Web Recorder, or Uploader.
      • Phone allows NameCoach to call you and prompts you to record over the call
      • Web Recorder uses your computer's microphone. Record and Review
      • Uploader allows you to upload a recording of your name (mp3, mp4, m4a, or wav)
    • Follow the on-screen or voice prompts to record your name. Speak clearly. You can choose to record again until you are satisfied with the result.

  1. Save
    • Click Submit. Your recording is now saved and accessible to your instructors and classmates in all your NameCoach-enabled courses.  

Use Your NameBadge in Email Signatures

The NameBadge feature allows you to share your name recording outside of Canvas (e.g., in your professional email signature). 

  1. Log in to the NameCoach Website (Use the single sign-on link if provided). 
  2. Navigate to My NameBadge at the top of the page.

  1. Scroll down to Publish your NameBadge section.
  2. Click Add NameBadge to Your Email Signature.

  1. Select a button or link option (like a microphone icon or "Hear my name") to copy the HTML or link.

  1. Go to your email settings (e.g., Outlook, Gmail) and paste the copied item into your signature field.
