Getting Started with NameCoach (Faculty)

Updated on

Overview

NameCoach is a valuable tool that allows students, faculty, and staff to record the preferred pronunciation of their name. By providing a quick and easy way to learn students' names, NameCoach helps faculty communicate effectively from day one, fostering a more engaging classroom environment that bolsters students' sense of community. This guide outlines the tool's key benefits and provides links to resources for integrating it into your course.

Key Features:

  • Build Stronger Rapport: Because names are fundamental to identity, correctly pronouncing them is essential for building strong connections with students, which fosters a more personal and supportive teaching and learning experience.
  • Easy Access via Canvas: The NameCoach roster (which includes name audio and pronouns) is integrated directly into Canvas, making it easily accessible from your course site.
  • "Record Once, Use Everywhere": Faculty and students only need to record their name one time for the audio to be accessible across all their NameCoach-enabled courses. Beyond the classroom, the NameBadge feature extends this benefit to professional communications, such as email signatures, ensuring correct pronunciation everywhere.
  • Student Reminders: Most implementations allow faculty to send an automated reminder email to students who have not yet recorded their name, encouraging full class participation.
