Working with Section Syllabi in Cross-Listed Courses (Faculty)

Updated on

Overview

Cross-listed courses in Simple Syllabus now use separate syllabi for each section rather than a single shared syllabus. This allows for greater flexibility when customizing course details such as assignments, schedules, and expectations. This guide shows you how to access and manage section-specific syllabi in a cross-listed course, along with a few important notes about what’s changed.

How to Access Section Syllabi via Canvas

The steps to access Simple Syllabus in Canvas remain the same. The difference for cross-listed courses is what you see after selecting the tool.

  1. Open your course in Canvas.
  2. Select Simple Syllabus from the course navigation menu.
  3. In a cross-listed course, the syllabus will not open automatically. Instead, you will see a list of sections you are teaching and will need to select the course title for the section you would like to view or edit. Please note it may take up to 10 seconds for the course list to load.
Canvas course interface displaying the “Simple Higher Ed” Simple Syllabus page. A message explains that the syllabus wasn't automatically loaded and gives possible reasons, followed by a list of currently enrolled course sections with clickable links.

Access from the Faculty Dashboard

You can also access your syllabi through the Simple Syllabus Faculty Dashboard, where syllabi are organized in a Kanban-style board by status (such as To Do or Completed). This view allows you to quickly locate and manage syllabi across all courses and sections.

Key Changes for Cross-Listed Courses

Section-Based Syllabi

Each section in a cross-listed course now has its own syllabus, rather than sharing a single syllabus across sections. This allows you to tailor content such as assignments, schedules, and expectations for each section as needed.

To save time, you can reuse content across sections by importing:

  • An entire syllabus
  • Specific components, such as the course schedule

View instructions on how to import a syllabus from another section.

Student Experience

Students automatically see the syllabus for their enrolled section when accessing Simple Syllabus in a cross-listed course. No additional steps are required.

Course Schedule Updates

As part of the move to separate syllabi for each section in cross-listed courses, the Canvas schedule sync feature is no longer available, as it is designed to work with a single syllabus per Canvas course. Non-cross-listed courses will continue to function as expected.

If you use similar schedules across sections, you can easily import a schedule from another section’s syllabus instead of recreating it. You can also choose to import only the course schedule without replacing the rest of your syllabus content.
